An Early Morning Walk in Venice
In July, 2013, I sailed from Venice on the Ruby Princess. The cruise started with an overnight on board and on the first morning, I decided to skip breakfast and walk into town at 7 AM armed with my camera. It was fascinating to see the city wake up. By 8 AM I reached Saint Mark's Square which was virtually empty - a sight to behold. A half hour later the doors of the Doge's Palace opened and I was one of the first ones to enter the impressive building. By the time I had treated myself to a late morning gelato at Venice's famous La Boutique del Gelato (recommended!) there was a relentless avalanche of visitors heading for Saint Mark's Square. As the city center began to turn into an Italian version of Times Square on New Year's Eve, I returned to my ship and spent a lazy afternoon lounging on an empty sun deck. Mission accomplished!
