About Nieuw Statendam

Nieuw Statendam is the second ship in Holland America's Pinnacle Class, the largest in their fleet. It is a sister ship to the 2016-built Koningsdam which was perceived as a significant step for the cruise line. Combining the favorite rooms of the existing Holland America fleet, Koningsdam added many new features like a double deck pool deck, an updated look for staterooms and an ultra modern theater. Nieuw Statendam is an identical sister to Koningsdam, built by Fincantieri at Venice and entered service on December 5, 2018.

ShipParade On Board Report: First ever cruise of Nieuw Statendam
Photos & text © 2018 Bart de Boer
On the morning of November 30, 2018 Holland America Line's brand new Nieuw Statendam leaves her birthplace. She slowly sails from the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, Italy and majestically makes her way down the Canal Grande in downtown Venice some hours later. Ushered into port by two tugboats, the Nieuw Statendam docks at the Venice Cruise Terminal where work continues ovenight to prepare the ship for her very first cruise. The next day, we take the vaporetto or water bus from St. Mark's Square. Under radiant blue skies, Nieuw Statendam makes a mighty impression with her midnight blue hull and boxy white superstructure crowned by an intriguing funnel.

Given the scheduled departure time of 2:00 PM, check-in for our short 3-night "shakedown" cruise to Civitavechhia starts at the rather unconventional time of 7:00 AM. We arrive by 10:30 AM after enjoying a simply delicious breakfast at the Bauer Hotel and a quick walk around a wonderfully deserted Venice. It is only a short stroll from the Alilaguna vaporetto to the Venice cruise terminal where there are no lines so we are on board within minutes. Welcome on board Nieuw Statendam!

It is really special to sail on a cruise ship that has just been delivered by the shipyard. There is a distinct "new car smell" and crew members, after having worked very hard for weeks on end, seem extra proud of their ship. First impressions are important and Nieuw Statendam does not disappoint. The security staff is smiling, a stylish elevator whisk us up to deck 5 and our home away from home: a very comfortable Vista Suite.

At 260 sq ft my category A stateroom is spacious and well designed. It also comes with the instant home-like feeling that is so apparent on all Holland Americe Line cruise ships. My piece of Nieuw Statendam is equipped with a very comfortable double bed, separate sitting area, a regular-sized balcony, ample closet space and a compact bathroom with walk-in "power shower". Oh and I almost forget the minibar and huge flat screen television that is positioned right in front of the bed. All of a sudden, watching a movie late at night seems rather attractive...

Let's leave our stateroom and discover all that Nieuw Statendam has to offer. In traditional ShipParade style, we start our tour of the beautiful ship high up on deck 12. All the way forward is the Crow's Nest and Exploration Central. This observation lounge must be the largest shore excurion office afloat and I like the fact that there are books, magazines and large interactive screen scattered throughout the room, reflecting the line's focus on destination, one of Holland America's hallmarks.

Aft of the Crow's Nest you will find the outdoor Retreat with 22 cabanas that can be rented and that provide wonderful views of the sea. A very nice addition to this area is a Jacuzzi. One deck up is a spacious sun deck that can be accessed by all passengers and does not appear on Nieuw Statendam's deck plan. It is therefore your best bet if you are looking for a quiet place to soak up some sunshine while at sea.

Focal point on the upper decks of Nieuw Statendam is the two-deck high Lido Pool amidships. It is massive and topped with an enormous glass roof that can slide open if the weather cooperates. The ample sized swimming pool is flanked by three Jacuzzis on one side and a giant LED screen on the other. If ever there was a multi purpose area, this is it. In the morning, the New York Pizza & Deli serves a continental breakfast away from the buzzing frantic Lido Market. At lunchtime, foodies flock to Dive-In, the ship's gourmet burger bar. And next door, Gelato serves up fantastic Italian ice cream (at a fee). Finally, at night, the white lounge couches on the upper level are the perfect place to watch a movie on the giant screen.

Lido Market is Nieuw Statendam's contemporary take on the traditional buffet restaurant. Holland America Line leads the way in the premium segment when it comes to casual dining. Walking aft from the Lido Pool, you will first see Canaletto, the ship's Italian specialty restaurant that is used as an overflow area for the buffet restaurant during breakfast and lunch. At the Lido Market you will see dual passageways that seem to stretch forever, lined with kiosks that serve up a staggering variation of food during breakfast, lunch and dinner. The sheer genius of the design team of Nieuw Statendam reveals itself when looking for a table. There are tables in the restaurant, forward at the Lido Pool, aft at the Sea View Pool. All immaculately set with cutlery and linen napkins, there are even tables outside with heaters discreetly tucked away in the ceiling. It is all most impressive.

Up one deck from the Lido Market you will find my personal favorite restaurant on Nieuw Statendam. Tamarind was first introduced on Holland America Line's Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam and serves pan-Asian cuisine from an extensive menu. On Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam, Tamarind is expanded with a full sit-down sushi bar offering beautiful views over the aft Sea View Pool. Reservations are required at Tamarind and the food here comes with a surcharge but if you, like me, crave Asian food this is the place for you.

All the way aft on Lido Deck you will find the Sea View Pool and the appropriately named Sea View Bar, where smokers may light up a cigarette or two and order a drink (or two). Overlooking the Sea View Pool are two more sun decks, each offering many sun loungers. Most spacious is the area on deck 11 which also features a great outdoor bar. In fact, Nieuw Statendam offers quite a lot of open deck space, including a full-size sports court and a separate jogging track.

Spanning two decks on the stern of the ship is the main dining room. Designed by Adam Tihany, the room features a row of oversized "whale ribs" anchored by a sculpted tower that houses the room's wine collection. Holland America Line offers passengers a choice between fixed seating arrangement and open seating. Food in the main dining room is quite good, with contemporary menu choices and very friendly service from Indonesian waiters.

Walking forward on Promenade Deck, we pass by the Photo Gallery where facial recognition is used to magically display your shipboard photos. Incidentally, in true Holland America Line fashion, the Promenade Deck lives up to its name and is of the wrap-around variant. But in complete contrast to all other ships of the line, lifesaving equipment on Koningsdam's and Nieuw Statendam's promenade decks blocks most views.

Amidships, spanning three decks, is Nieuw Statendam's atrium featuring a rather puzzling stainless steel sculpture that gives the term "caught behind bars" new meaning. Lining the Atrium on Promenade Deck is the very popular Grand Dutch Café. First introduced on the line's Koningsdam, the Grand Dutch Café serves up excellent specialty coffees and quirky Dutch snacks such as pea soup, fries with mayonnaise and Dutch pancakes. While the food is included in the fare, the coffee is not. The Grand Dutch Café is manned by friendly Dutch staff, which makes the experience pleasantly authentic.

Further forward on Promenade Deck, we pass by a few boutiques, an art gallery and the balcony level of the stately Queen's Lounge. This lounge with its expansive dance floor is used for both classical concerts and late night dance parties. Holland America Line have invested a lot of time and money and now boast innovative entertainment, including the superb and wildly popular B.B. King's Blues Club.

Nieuw Statendam's casino is perhaps not as grand as the gambling halls on comparable ships, but it is all the more stately with its grand staircase leading to the "Music Walk". With non-stop music one deck down, casino guests can enjoy the entertainment without having to miss their chance of winning a fortune. The grand staircase is worth a special mention; it is quite striking with its stunning gold leaf light fixture and the illusion of gold leaves being spilled on the stairs.

All the way forward and spanning two decks is Nieuw Statendam's World Stage. Through ingenious use of giant LED screens, the atmosphere of the room can change with the click of a mouse in the control booth. I have to say I was amazed by the way Holland America Line's entertainment has evolved. We see a stunning dance performance here and I can only imagine how stunning the signature "Planet Earth" concert will be in this room. Mind you, there are no pillars in this giant theater so sightlines from most seats are excellent.

We move one deck down to Plaza Deck 2. Directly aft of the World Stage is "Music Walk", another Holland America first. On the port side, Billboard Onboard features duelling pianos and a very popular bar. The starboard side is home to The Rolling Stone Rock Room - a new initiative to raise Nieuw Statendam's entertainment to a new level. We witness the first ever performance here and see the crowd go wild to the sounds of electric guitars and all too familiar rock classics.

Directly aft of the Music Walk, the lower level of the Queen's Lounge attracts the dancing crowds as the incomparable B.B. King's Blues Club takes center stage nightly. During our shakedown cruise, the dance floor is filled to capacity every night and the six-piece band is among the best I have ever seen on any cruise ship.

A wide passageway leads past more shops to another watering hole. Overlooking the Atrium is the inviting and elegant Ocean Bar, perfect for pre-dinner cocktails and a more traditional after-dinner rendez-vous. The passenger flow on deck 2 is almost ideal, with many entertainment venues, bars and specialty restaurants lining a main "boulevard". It is all incredibly well thought out.

You will find three specialty restaurants on Plaza Deck. Directly off the Atrium is the line's hallmark Pinnacle Grill, serving excellent steaks and seafood at a surcharge. The design of the room is classic, resembling the style of the Smoking Room on board the classic ss Rotterdam, built in 1959 and now a hotel ship in the city it was named after.

But there is more: exclusive to Nieuw Statendam and sister ship Koningsdam is Rudi's Sel de Mer, an intimate high-class seafood restaurant run by Holland America Line's Master Chef Rudi Sodamin. During our cruise menus showed a la carte pricing, making this restaurant one the most exclusive on board. Needless to say, the food here is just as exclusive.

The last specialty restaurant on board is not the least. Just before Nieuw Statendam entered service, Holland America Line decided to change the Culinary Arts Center to Club Orange. Currently rolled out on both Nieuw Statendam and Koningsdam, Club Orange is a specialty restaurant that welcomes guests staying in suites as well as guests that are willing to pay a surcharge to enjoy meals in this restaurant. The no-view restaurant with its cool nordic looks seems ill-fitted for its new role though.

And this concludes our virtual tour of Holland America Line's Nieuw Statendam, a ship that represents a distinct step forward for a line that has long been known for their traditional cruise experience. On board Nieuw Statendam, guests of all ages will feel at home. With a more modern look, significantly enhanced entertainment options and a continued focus on very good food, Nieuw Statendam gives value for money. Add to that the very personal Philippine and Indonesian crew, Dutch officers and some unique itineraries, Nieuw Statendam seems to merge the best of all worlds.
